The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly known as "Il Duomo", is one of the most magnificent churches in Italy and the world. It was begun in 1296 in Gothic style and completed until 1436 with a dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi, a masterpiece of architecture and world landmark. This dome is the largest brick dome in the world, even today! Because of its enormous size and detail, it was a very ambitious project that took more than a century, and so it features several architectural styles as time passed by. The Gothic Revival style can be seen in the faƧade, buttresses and interior. However, this cathedral shows the first features of what would be the Renaissance style, as latter architects wanted to break away from the Gothic. It is, along with the Campanile and Baptistery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
